The 15th edition of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON 2024) is ongoing in Morocco. Twelve teams qualified for the tournament to compete for continental glory. The tournament is now in the business end with the semi-final fixtures played today (Tuesday, 22) ahead of the final on July 26.  The journey has been extraordinary—marked by dazzling performances, unexpected upsets, and deeper conversations about the future of women’s football in Africa.

Group Stages: Traditional Giants Dominated

The tournament started on a high note with the hosts, Morocco, playing to a 2-2 draw with Zambia. It was a tense match as Zambia went ahead twice but couldn’t see out the victory. In their next game, they beat DRC Congo 4-2 and narrowly defeated Senegal 1-0 and topped the group on goal difference.

The Quarter-Finals were Characterised by Drama and Dominance

The WAFCON 2024 quarter finals lived up to expectations with thrill and memorable drama

Nigeria 5–0 Zambia

Nigeria want their hands on the new WAFCON trophy and their performance in the quarter final demonstrated their seriousness. They thrashed the Copper Queens of Zambia 5-0 with goals from Chinwendu Ihezuo, Esther Okoronkwo, Osinachi Ohale, Oluwatosin Demehin and Folashade Ijamilusi.

Nora Hauptle described the defeat as a fist to the face to ESPN Africa, but insisted on their continuous development.

“A 5-0 defeat feels like a fist in the face, but maybe it’s better to lose clearly than for it to be close,” she concluded. “We will accept this loss, make a good evaluation, look forward and continue our development.

“We have to fully trust this team, have to compete, and hunt again for the title. We’ll return to Zambia, go back to work, and see what happens in the next tournament.”

South Africa 0–0 Senegal (SA won 4–2 on penalties)

In one of the most intense encounters, South Africa was pushed to the edge by Senegal. The match ended goalless after 120 minutes, and goalkeeper Andile Dlamini became the hero in the shootout. The defending champions lived to fight another day, but concerns about their finishing linger.

Ghana 0–0 Algeria (GHA won 4–2 on penalties)

The Black Queens of Ghana went through after penalties and got to this stage for the first time since 2016. In the recent past, the team has posted underwhelming results, but the new coach is turning things around.

Semi-Finals: Titans Clash

Nigeria vs. South Africa

The Super Falcons qualified for the final after narrowly beating South Africa 2-1. Rasheedat Ajibade gave Nigeria the lead in the 45th minute from the penalty spot. Shortly after resumption, Linda Motlahlo equalized from the penalty spot. However, Michelle Alozie netted in the 94th minute to book a final spot for the Falcons.

Morocco vs. Ghana

Morocco has grown in confidence each game, with Jraidi and Chebbak in sparkling form. But Ghana—disciplined, focused, and fearless—have the tools to upset the hosts. Much will depend on their ability to silence the Rabat crowd and convert limited chances.
