Black players worldwide are making an impact on the biggest club competition in women’s football. Regardless of the team they represent, these footballers have earned a place in the game’s history.

Tabitha Chawinga – Olympique Lyon

Malawian Tabitha Chawinga was a star even before she played in Europe. At her former clubs – Kvarnsvedens IK, Jiangsu Suning, and Wuhan Jiang University – she finished as the top scorer for at least one season. In 2022, she debuted in European football when Inter Milan and Paris Saint Germain signed her on loan. In 2024, Lyon signed her permanently and cemented her place in the starting lineup.

Christy Ucheibe – Benfica Women

Nigerian player Christy Ucheibe played in the UEFA Women’s Champions League four times since 2020 when she signed for the team. She has featured in two games which is an equivalent of 85 minutes. In the 2024/25 season, they were knocked out before the group stage.

Chiamaka Nnandozie – PSG

Nigerian goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnandozie has been a star for Paris FC. In 2023, she saved a penalty and made other important saves to help her team knock out Wolfsburg from the Champions League. Nnandozie joined the team in 2020 from River Angels in Nigeria.

Halimat Ayinde – FC Rosengard

Halimat is another African player who starred in the UEFA Women’s Champions League with her former club Minsk. That said, she has played for other notable clubs including Asarums IF, Eskilstuna United and Swedish side FC Rosengard.

Nicole Payne – PSG

Nicole Payne is on loan to the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) side Portland Thorns from Paris Saint Germain. In 2023, she signed for her first senior club, PSG and has featured in two games. During her college career, she played for the West Virginia Mountaineers and USC Trojans.
