Rwanda has reached a deal with the United States to take in 250 deported immigrants from the U.S. Rwandan government spokesperson, Yolande Makolo, confirmed the country “agreed with the United States to accept up to 250 migrants.”

Under the scheme, Rwanda promises to provide “workforce training, health care, and accommodation to jump start their lives in Rwanda”, one of the things it does to demonstrate its “ability to approve each individual proposed for resettlement.”

This move draws different reactions, as some argue that African countries are being forced to take in American deportees. On this decision, Makolo explained that this move is grounded in the country’s past experience. “Nearly every Rwandan family has experienced the hardships of displacement”.

Furthermore, she said that Rwanda’s values include reintegration and rehabilitation. This isn’t the first time it has been a third country of deportation. Previously, Rwanda collaborated with the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) to host Libyan asylum seekers and refugees, welcoming around 3000 people between 2019 and 2025.

In 2022, it reached a deal with the United Kingdom to receive illegal immigrants. However, the UK scrapped the scheme after numerous legal challenges. The country received more than $300 million and refused to reimburse it after the Labour government came to office.

Despite these agreements, human rights experts raise concerns over deporting immigrants from a third country other than their country of origin, arguing it might violate international law.
