The word “tostone” comes from the Spanish word “tostón,” which means “big toast” or “big fry.” The tostones can be eaten at any time of the day and can be eaten as an appetiser, snack or part of a larger meal. Here’s how to prepare the Cuban tostones.

How to Make the Cuban Tostones

Ingredients

  • 2 green plantains
  • Vegetable Oil for frying
  • Salt

Instructions

  1. On low heat, add about one inch of oil to a frying pan. 
  2. Peel the plantain and cut into four slices.
  3. When done, add the plantains into the heated oil and fry for about five minutes.
  4. Place the fried plantain on a paper towel or press, cover it over and smash the plantain into about ½ ½-inch thick.
  5. Fry the smashed plantains in the same frying pan until they are golden brown on both sides. When you remove them from the pan, place them on a paper towel to dry the excess oil. Salt accordingly and enjoy.
