South African businessman Patrice Motsepe has been re-elected unopposed as the President of Confederation of African Football (CAF) during Wednesday’s extraordinary general assembly.
Motsepe was first elected to the position in 2021 and will now serve another four-year term until 2029. He didn’t have a competitor and so his election was a formality. The South African said he wants to continue the “good progress” he has made since taking over the African football governing body.

I was partly taken aback by the huge insistence about continuity,” Motsepe had told BBC Sport Africa in 2024.
“There was some concern that there may not be the same degree of emphasis on governance, on ethics and the sort of fundamental changes that we’ve had to introduce.
“There’s a lot of good, good progress that has been made, but there is still a lot of work to be done.”

Financial Stability
When he ascended to office, Motsepe revealed he inherited a deficit of between $40-50 million. Additionally, CAF had to pay media company Lagarde a settlement fee of $50 million, after former president Ahmad cancelled its broadcast deal in 2019.
Motsepe announced his administration has reduced the debt to under $10 million after paying the first $25 million in the 2022/23 financial year and the second payment in the 2023/24 financial year.
When it comes to money generation, the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations brought $72 million, an amount that’s 18 times bigger than the 2022 edition. This resulted from good relations with broadcasters and sponsors.

Strict Ethical Policies
Another area that Motsepe focuses on so keenly is ethics. He has a zero-tolerance policy on corruption as he works to clean African football.

“The zero tolerance of corruption and bribery in football will transcend to zero tolerance of bribery and corruption in politics, in business and on the African continent,” he told BBC Sport Africa.
“We had to make people – all of the member associations – realise that governance, ethics, compliance with the Fifa and Caf statutes and regulations are in the benefit of everybody, as are good referees and match commissioners.”

Election of CAF Executive Committee
Apart from Motsepe’s re-election, CAF also elected its executive committee. The following members are part of it:
- Wallace Karia (CECAFA) – Tanzania
- Sadi Walid (UNAF) – Algeria
- Samuel Eto’o (UNIFFAC) – Cameroon
- Mustapha Raji (WAFU A) – Liberia
- Kurt Okraku (WAFU B) – Ghana
- Bestine Kazadi Ditabala (UNIFFAC) – DR Congo
Samuel Eto’o’s was the only candidate from his region and took the seat. This comes after his initial ban by CAF and FIFA, due to ethical breaches, was reversed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
