How to Write a Cover Letter that’ll Get Your Foot in the Door

  1. Keep it short and positive to grab the hiring manager’s attention. This should be one page of an A4 form or can be sent as an email. Ensure you check if the company has specific instructions.
  2. Include positive keywords and phrases that are relevant to the job you’re applying for.
  3. Ensure your cover letter doesn’t have any grammatical errors; otherwise, the hiring manager will reject it.
  4. Write a professional introduction. For example, dear sir or madam, followed by RE,: which will carry the position you’re applying for.
  5. Indicate the job position you’re applying for. For example, I am writing to apply for the position of (insert job title) as advertised in (insert where you saw the job ad).
  6. Explain who you are and why you’ve applied for this position. For example, I am a positive, self-motivated employee who understands attention to detail…
  7. Add your skills and attributes in bullet point form.
  8. Have a punchy closing statement. For example, I strongly believe I am the best candidate for this position and would like to attend an interview.
  9. Sign off. For example, yours faithfully and below this, include your full name and contact details.
