The standard deviation is a measure of how spread out the data values are from their average. It gives you information on how much difference there is from the average value. A low standard of deviation shows that most numbers are close to the mean, and a high standard of deviation means that most numbers are spread out from their average. So, how do you get this? Here’s how to calculate standard deviation.

How to Calculate Standard Deviation
- Using a set of numbers, 82, 93, 98, 89 and 88, start by finding the mean. To do this, use the formula X=sum÷n (size of the sample).
- The calculation is adding the numbers (82+93+98+89+88), which totals 450. Divide the total of 450 by 5, which results in 90. This represents the sample mean.
- To calculate the standard deviation, in a square root sign, place the difference of each X value and the mean, square it by 2, take the sum of the resultant value, divide it by n-1 and get its square root.
- So, [(82-90) ² + (93-90) ² + (98-90) ² + (89-90) ² + (88-90) ²] divide by 5-1. This results to (-8) ² + (3) ² + (8) ² + (-1) ² + (-2) ² = 142
- Take the 142, divide it by 4, and get the square root of the answer, which will be 5.958. This is the standard deviation.

This is how to calculate standard deviation. You must know the formulas first and then apply them accordingly. If you’ve practised this multiple times, it’ll be easy to follow and remember. However, if you haven’t done mathematics for a while, it might be a bit confusing, but take your time.
