George Foreman’s Career

George Foreman was introduced to boxing by a boxing coach and mentor, Doc Broaddus, when he joined Job Corps Center in Pleasanton, California. He was a troubled kid who was involved in street fighting, so when he was there, Doc Broaddus saw his athleticism and power and invited him to train.

In 1968, he won gold in the Summer Olympics in Mexico City. The following year, he turned professional and began a journey that would have a lasting impact in the boxing arena.

He was involved in some of the most historical boxing matches. In 1973, he defeated Joe Frazier in two rounds to win the heavyweight title for the first time in his career. He went on and defeated Ken Norton. This led to a fight against Muhammad Ali, the famous Rumble in the Jungle bout, which he lost. Moreover, Foreman fought Ron Lyle, Frazier II and Jimmy Young.

Why Did Foreman Quit Boxing?

In 1977, after fighting Jimmy Young, Foreman had a near-death experience in which he explained, that he encountered Jesus, a moment that led him to leave boxing to follow Christ. For the next 10 years, Foreman spread the Gospel, became an ordained minister, build churches, and operated a youth centre.
