The family of the late former Zambian President Edgar Chagwa Lungu has confirmed that his funeral and burial will take place in South Africa, in accordance with their wishes for a private ceremony.

In a press statement issued on Thursday, family spokesperson Hon. Makebi Zulu expressed the family’s deep gratitude for the widespread messages of condolence and solidarity received from across Africa and the wider global community.
“This period has been deeply emotional for the family, and we are grateful for the overwhelming support and condolences extended to the family from across the continent and the globe,” the statement read.
The family extended special appreciation to the Government of the Republic of South Africa for its cooperation and support, particularly for respecting the family’s right to a private burial.
“Your non-interference and respect for the South African Constitution and the rights of the family is commendable. This will allow us the space to mourn and celebrate the life of our beloved Edgar Chagwa Lungu in dignity and peace,” said Zulu.
The statement also noted the visit of South Africa’s Minister of International Relations, Mr. Ronald Lamola, who personally delivered a message of condolence from President Cyril Ramaphosa. The family described the gesture as “heartwarming” and deeply appreciated.

Reaffirming their position, the Lungu family called for unity among Zambians during this period of mourning and asked the public to respect their decision for a private farewell in Johannesburg.
“The Lungu family continues to seek peace and unity among fellow Zambians during this time and thanks all friends, supporters, and members of the public for their understanding, compassion, and willingness to mourn the former head of state,” the statement concluded.
This development follows President Hakainde Hichilema’s national address on Wednesday evening, during which he announced the cancellation of the official mourning period. The move came after the Lungu family opted not to repatriate the late president’s body to Zambia, contrary to earlier arrangements made with the government.
